The Opportunity: Make a Direct Impact on Veterans’ Lives

We’re seeking a passionate Senior Product Manager to join a new, dedicated team collaborating closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This pivotal role focuses on enhancing the digital tools Veterans rely on daily to manage their benefits, spanning critical platforms like VA.gov and the VA Health and Benefits mobile app. You’ll be instrumental in improving key services, including the Claim Status Tool, decision review forms, and related processes.

Your work will have a tangible impact, from improving the clarity of evidence requests and expanding claim status visibility to modernizing underlying systems and significantly boosting accessibility and usability, especially for complex decision notification and appeal processes. You’ll guide and support Veterans and claimants through moments that matter most in their benefits journey.

Important Note: This is a Key Personnel Role

What You’ll Be Doing: Driving Product Excellence

Your responsibilities will be dynamic and evolve, but initially will center on:

Shape Product Strategy & Vision

Define, articulate, and iteratively refine a clear, compelling product vision and strategy that resonates with users, stakeholders, and your team. Establish crystal-clear context around the “why” at every level, fostering a shared purpose that empowers the team to self-organize effectively around problem-solving.

Lead Continuous Discovery & Insight

Become the domain expert. Lead continuous product discovery efforts, leveraging the team’s UX research and design capabilities to gain deep insights into user needs, identify high-value problems, and strategically prioritize the most impactful work.

Drive Agile Delivery & Execution

Guide the team through effective agile delivery practices. Own and manage the product backlog, prioritizing based on value and outcomes. Master the art of breaking down complex problems into smaller, iterative chunks, leading the team to validate risky assumptions early and deliver value continuously.

Champion Collaboration & Communication

Bridge the gap between the team and stakeholders. Communicate product strategy, roadmaps, and progress transparently to empower informed decision-making. Foster a healthy, trust-based rapport with teammates and stakeholders, understanding diverse constraints and collaboratively developing solutions that address sometimes conflicting needs. Convey high-level intent clearly (via user stories, story maps, etc.) in a way that fosters creative, cross-functional problem-solving and supports team self-management.

What You’ll Bring: Skills & Experience

Must-Haves:
  • Proven expertise in leveraging product discovery techniques to shape product vision, strategy, features, user stories, and prioritization.

  • Exceptional skills as an effective communicator, leader, and motivator.

  • In-depth knowledge and practical application of Agile principles and practices.

  • Mastery in writing clear, concise user stories and acceptance criteria that define the “what” and “why,” empowering the team to innovate on the “how.”

  • Successful track record of launching products from conception through production, coupled with strong client and stakeholder management skills.

  • Experience effectively leveraging AI-powered prototyping tools and/or IDEs (such as Vercel V0, Loveable, Replit, Copilot, Cursor), maintaining critical oversight and responsibility for the work produced.

  • Familiarity with using AI tools and services and other enabling technologies (like MCP servers) to accelerate understanding of problem domains, rapidly prototype solutions, and support software delivery within a cross-functional team.

  • Strong cross-disciplinary understanding of the full software development process, including research, design, development, testing, and deployment.

  • Genuine eagerness to continuously grow your AI skills and strategically leverage AI to enhance outcomes.

  • Must have lived and worked in the United States for 3 of the last 5 years.

  • While we are remote-first, some client work may occasionally require travel. If this is a concern, please discuss it with us during your interview.

Bonus Points:
  • Previous experience in Government contracting or the civic tech space.
