Protect Democracy is a nonpartisan organization founded in late 2016 with a critical mission: to prevent our democracy from declining into a more authoritarian form of government. Our team comprises over 120 experts from diverse professional backgrounds, all united by this urgent goal. We operate with speed, expertise, and a deep commitment to our principles.

As our Finance Manager, your work directly contributes to the long-term health and effectiveness of Protect Democracy. You won’t just manage numbers; you’ll build the financial scaffolding that enables our critical legal, policy, legislative, and communications work to thrive. This role is fundamental to our sustainability and growth, ensuring we have the resources and robust processes needed to defend democracy.
What You’ll Be Responsible For:
As a key member of our Finance team, your responsibilities will include:
- Lead and manage the annual budgeting process in partnership with the Finance Director and team leaders, fostering a culture of financial ownership across the organization.
- Develop and deliver insightful financial reporting and analysis, including detailed budget tracking, forecasting, and financial modeling to inform strategic decisions.
- Serve as the primary financial point of contact for all staff, offering guidance, support, and conducting contract reviews.
- Oversee daily cash management and support the execution of our investment strategy.
- Contribute to multi-year financial planning and strategic forecasting efforts.
- Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of all financial records in close coordination with our accounting partners.
- Continuously identify opportunities to enhance internal controls, streamline financial operations, and implement best practices for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Manage the organization’s facilities portfolio, including leased offices and coworking spaces.
We’re Looking for Someone With:
- At least 7 years of progressive experience in financial management or operations, with a significant focus on core finance functions.
- Solid proficiency and practical experience with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Demonstrated expertise in managing comprehensive budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes across diverse teams or departments.
- A proven track record of successfully improving or scaling internal financial systems, policies, or processes.
- The ability to navigate organizational needs in a fast-paced, impact-driven environment, balancing mission goals with financial sustainability and compliance.
- Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- A naturally collaborative, proactive, and solutions-oriented mindset.
- A commitment to continuous learning, comfort giving and receiving feedback, and enthusiasm for working effectively across differences.

Nice to Haves:
While not required, candidates with experience in nonprofit finance or specific familiarity with systems like Sage Intacct or Martus Solutions are encouraged to apply.
Compensation & Benefits:
The starting salary range for this remote Finance Manager role is $112,200 – $125,000, commensurate with your experience, capabilities, and internal equity. We anticipate candidates meeting the minimum requirements will typically fall into the lower end of this range, with significantly more experienced candidates nearing the higher end.

Location & Flexibility:
This is a remote-first position based anywhere within the United States. While we embrace remote work, please note that employment may not be possible in all states; we will discuss your location during the hiring process. All team members are expected to travel for in-person retreats at least twice per year, and this role may require additional occasional travel.
