Your Impact as a Medical Coder
As a Medical Coder, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our medical records. You will be responsible for:
- Accurate Coding: Utilizing your expertise in medical terminology and coding systems, you will assign precise ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology) to diagnoses, procedures, and operations based on thorough review of patient medical records and official coding guidelines.
- DRG Optimization: Ensuring all relevant information is present for accurate Diagnostic Related Group (DRG) assignment and proper ranking of diagnoses.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with hospital designees to clarify diagnoses, obtain necessary details, and ensure accurate code assignment. You’ll also respond to inquiries from hospital staff regarding medical documentation and DRGs.
- Data Integrity: Entering final diagnostic and procedural codes into an automated grouper system, and abstracting/retrieving medical data for evaluation, planning, or research.
- Compliance: Adhering to internal procedures and regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, including the Federal False Claims Act. Reporting any potential coding discrepancies to the HIM/Medical Records Manager.
What You’ll Bring to the Table
We’re looking for a dedicated professional with:
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM codes, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes.
- Proven ability to understand and accurately code medical records.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Exceptional organizational and follow-through abilities.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred.
- AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification and/or eligibility to sit for the examination strongly preferred, or Associate of Science degree with RHIT or Bachelor of Science with RHIA.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in acute care inpatient and/or outpatient coding.
