Lead User Research for Global Expansion at Monzo
Location: London or UK Remote | Salary: £125,000 – £155,000 (based on experience) + Stock Options + Comprehensive Benefits
Monzo is seeking a highly motivated and experienced User Research Manager to lead our expansion efforts into new markets. As a vital member of our growing User Research team, you’ll play a pivotal role in understanding the unique needs of consumers and businesses worldwide, ensuring our products resonate and drive adoption in diverse cultural contexts.
About the User Research Team
Our team of approximately 20 talented User Researchers is embedded within cross-functional teams, focusing on key areas like Wealth, Borrowing, and Operations. Led by Katherine Vaughan, Director of User Research, the discipline resides within the Design team, alongside Product Design and Brand Design (led by Chief Design Officer, Vuokko Aro). What You’ll Do
- Manage and mentor a team of user researchers focused on new market expansion.
- Champion a “first-principles” approach to understanding new markets, leveraging existing knowledge and localization tools.
- Serve as a key advocate for customer needs across Monzo, ensuring insights are actionable and impactful.
- Increase the visibility and impact of research findings throughout the organization.
- Collaborate with the Director of Research to prioritize impactful projects and empower researchers with autonomy.
- Understand and support the growth and well-being of your direct reports, aligning their skills with impactful opportunities.
- Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and development within the Research team.
- Lead forums to foster team collaboration and shape the direction of the research function.
- Partner with Research Operations to scale team systems and processes.
- Drive continuous improvement in research quality through feedback and enhanced methodologies.
- Recruit and onboard talented and diverse User Researchers.
- Actively promote the team’s presence in the external research community.
Your Day-to-Day
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to develop and execute product strategies for new markets.
- Provide ongoing support and guidance to direct reports through regular 1:1s and development planning.
- Influence key stakeholders across the organization, including product, marketing, compliance, and legal teams.
- Partner with design, product, marketing, and engineering leadership to create optimal conditions for team success.
- Contribute to the development of team-wide practices, such as progression frameworks.
- Actively participate in the Design Leadership team.
- Educate colleagues, including senior stakeholders, on the value and application of user research.

- Has proven experience as a User Research Manager in a high-growth tech company.
- Has experience leading user research for global expansion and product localization.
- Possesses a deep understanding of tailoring products to local market nuances.
- Is proactive, results-oriented, and focused on achieving impactful outcomes.
- Is passionate about delivering exceptional user experiences.
- Excels at collaborating with cross-functional teams (Data, Product, Design).
- Is an experienced coach and mentor to seasoned User Researchers.
- Empathetically leads and supports their team, fostering autonomy and growth.
- Is skilled at educating non-researchers about the value of user insights.
- Has a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Is adept at integrating marketing insights, quantitative data, and other sources for informed decision-making.
