The Opportunity: Software Development Engineer, Messaging Tribe

Join our critical Messaging Tribe where we engineer the core infrastructure powering those billions of real-time conversations between consumers and brands. This team owns vital, mission-critical services like agent matching and conversation lifecycle management.

As a Software Development Engineer within this group, you will play a pivotal role in the design and development of highly scalable backend systems. You’ll work hands-on with leading technologies including Java, Kafka, Kubernetes, and GCP. This is an exciting chance to collaborate across teams, tackle complex problems at scale, and actively contribute to our significant migration towards a modern, cloud-native, stateless architecture.

What You’ll Do (Your Impact):

  • Optimize and enhance the existing functionality of our core messaging platform.
  • Design and implement compelling new features using Java and Spring.
  • Support and drive the migration of critical services to cloud-native environments.
  • Leverage cutting-edge technologies to solve unique, large-scale challenges for our global customers.
  • Collaborate closely with a team of experienced and talented engineers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Help maintain an exceptional uptime of >99.999% for our mission-critical messaging service.
  • Actively participate in the team’s on-call rotation, contributing to our rapid-response capabilities.

What You’ll Bring (Technical Expertise):

We are looking for engineers with proficiency across our modern tech stack:

Key Technologies You’ll Master:

  • Java (Versions 8, 11, 17) & Spring Framework
  • Messaging Systems: Apache Kafka
  • Containerization & Orchestration: Kubernetes, Docker, Puppet
  • Databases & Caching: Couchbase, Redis, Elasticsearch, Hadoop
  • Cloud Platforms: GCP, AWS, experience with Hybrid (On-Premises) infrastructure is a plus
  • CI/CD Tools: TeamCity, Jenkins
  • Other Relevant Tech: Vault, Terraform, OAuth2.0 Provider, and more in our diverse ecosystem

Why You’ll Thrive (Your Profile for Success):

  • Experience: 3+ years in professional backend development.
  • Core Java Mastery: A strong, MUST-HAVE understanding of Java fundamentals, including multithreading, OO concepts, and design patterns.
  • Cloud Exposure: Experience with GCP is a significant advantage.
  • API Development: Proven experience building REST APIs, preferably with Java.
  • WebSocket Knowledge: Experience with WebSocket is an advantage.
  • Distributed Systems: Experience working with mission-critical, distributed microservices architecture.
  • Ownership Mindset: Willingness to take ownership across the entire development lifecycle – from design and implementation through deployment and maintenance.
  • Quality & Pace: Ability to work efficiently and quickly while maintaining meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Problem Solver: Comfortable navigating ambiguity and solving undefined problems effectively.
  • Communication: Ability to clearly articulate and drive technical solutions to complex challenges.
  • Team Player: A strong collaborative spirit and ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Global Collaboration: Experience working with globally distributed teams across multiple time zones is a plus.
