The Opportunity: Engineering Manager, People-First Scaling

We are actively seeking an exceptional Engineering Manager to play a pivotal role in leading and expanding our engineering organization, with a particular emphasis on the commerce sector. While familiarity with the Shopify ecosystem is a welcome asset, your primary focus will be on enabling the successful scaling, support, and strategic structuring of our large, distributed engineering team.

In this critical people-first leadership position, you will directly oversee a talented group of 50+ engineers and designers distributed across North America and LATAM. You will be instrumental in navigating our planned growth trajectory as we expand our team to over 100 members in the coming year.

It’s important to note: this role is distinctly non-client-facing and not focused on project delivery. It sits at the vital intersection of engineering operations, talent acquisition, and organizational scaling. You will collaborate closely with our recruiting partners to align talent acquisition efforts with anticipated demand, effectively bridging sales projections with strategic resourcing to fuel business growth.

What You’ll Be Doing: Key Responsibilities

  • Lead & Nurture Talent: Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to a high-performing team of 50+ engineers and designers, championing their development, engagement, and overall team health.
  • Foster Skill Development: Oversee internal initiatives and “bench” projects designed to help engineers deepen their expertise in areas like Shopify and full-stack development between client engagements.
  • Drive Organizational Scaling: Contribute significantly to the growth of the engineering team towards 100+ members by implementing scalable systems, refining organizational structure, and cultivating a strong team culture.
  • Strategic Resourcing & Hiring Alignment: Work closely with the recruiting team to strategically align hiring velocity and required skillsets with the incoming sales pipeline and business needs.
  • Optimize Team Deployment: Make informed decisions on assigning engineers to projects based on their unique skillsets, availability, and individual development goals.
  • Shape the Team: Hiring & Integration: Play a leading role in the interviewing, hiring, and onboarding processes to ensure the successful integration of high-quality, impactful new team members.
  • Champion Growth & Performance: Conduct regular performance reviews, facilitate compensation adjustments, and support the creation of individual development plans to foster continuous growth.
  • Unite Distributed Teams: Oversee teams across multiple regions (North America and nearshore LATAM), ensuring cultural cohesion and consistent readiness for technical challenges.

What You’ll Bring: Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven Leadership of Large Teams: Demonstrated success managing significant engineering and/or design teams (ideally 50-100 people; minimum 30+).
  • Experience Navigating Complex Environments: Background working with or overseeing teams contributing to enterprise-level clients or significant projects.
  • Expertise in Building Scalable Systems: Ability to design and implement scalable systems, processes, and structures that support growth, performance management, and team engagement.
  • Strategic Partnership (Recruiting/Sales): Experience collaborating effectively with recruiting or sales teams to align talent strategies with business development and hiring demands.
  • Experience with Distributed & Multicultural Teams: Familiarity and success managing teams operating across different geographies and cultural backgrounds.
  • Exceptional Communication & Autonomous Execution: Outstanding communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, coupled with a high degree of self-direction and accountability.

Bonus Points: Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with E-commerce Ecosystems (especially Shopify) or other modern digital commerce platforms.
  • Experience gained within a digital product studio, consulting agency, or similar digital services environment.
  • Prior experience managing teams composed of both engineers and designers.
  • Understanding of nearshore talent markets, particularly in LATAM.
