The Opportunity: Backend Software Engineer

As a Backend Software Engineer on the Core Platforms team, you’ll be instrumental in modernizing and scaling the systems that power Wattpad. You’ll be designing, building, and maintaining critical backend infrastructure, ensuring our platform can handle the demands of a rapidly growing user base. You’ll have the chance to work with a diverse tech stack and contribute to architectural decisions that shape the future of our platform.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Designing, building, and maintaining functionality on a large-scale distributed system.
• Developing new features, tools, and services using Go and PHP.
• Improving the reliability and performance of core components.
• Writing comprehensive unit and service tests.
• Defining best practices and mentoring other engineers.
• Researching and implementing new technologies to solve future scaling challenges.
• Championing the adoption of tools across the engineering organization.

What You Bring to the Team:

• 5-7+ years of experience in software development.
• Experience monitoring distributed systems at scale.
• Proven ability to develop scalable, robust, and maintainable code.
• Strong proficiency in Go and PHP.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, etc.) for 3+ years.
• Familiarity with Docker.
• Experience with container orchestration tools (Kubernetes, ECS).
• Ability to comprehend complex codebases and thorough feature testing.
• Comfort debugging systems across different layers.
• Adaptability between static and dynamic languages.
• A passion for solving challenging problems and documenting solutions.
• Experience mentoring other developers and providing technical leadership.

Bonus Points:

• Exposure to Infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform & Ansible).
• Hands-on experience with CI systems (TravisCI).
• A passion for security and privacy.

Salary:

$120,000 – $160,000 CAD per year
